Currently SmugMug is running a contest asking what you would make a book of. It got me thinking that is an interesting question. I had lots of ideas floating around about what to make. I thought about some of the previously thought of ideas such as a picture a day or a 365 project. There have been 365 projects done by photographers that are more dedicated to the project than I would be. My favorite examples would be http://www.schmootography.com/Portraits/365 and http://www.flickr.com/photos/calvinfornia/5310498699/in/photostream/Those galleries have shown the dedication and work that they put into it. I am not sure I have the time and ability especially given the work requirements for travel. That is what gave me the idea. Not to do a 365, but rather to do a retrospective book of projects I have been involved with and places I have been. All the pictures and text would be mine. It could be a cool coffee table style book but also a good thing to look back on every so often and go – “I really did do that didn’t I?”The example I use is in the recent past at work I was dealing with a distributor who was bidding on some major sporting venues. They asked if we as a company had any experience with those types of venue. After a brief awkward moment when I thought they were joking I started listing some of the projects I had worked on. After the fifth stadium or so, I realized I do not have a collection of projects I can point to easily. While the pictures in there might not be ideal from a photographic stand point, the fact that they would capture the memories of the past projects is what would make them so great. In the book I would also place some of the articles about the professional projects/installations as well as other articles that I have written. The book would be a nice collection so that I can share what I have accomplished and where I have been. An example of places I have been, Bismark, North Dakota, USA to Dubai, United Arab Emirates to Buenos Aires, Argentina; I have gotten to go to some interesting places. This book could very quickly turn into a photo album; it would not be as the pictures would still be culled ruthlessly to have the high quality images in it, not just images of projects and places. It would tell the story of the past decade plus not just a collection of pictures. The cover image would most likely be:
Yes, it would be a book. Not an iPad collection or a digital slide show but a printed analog book. There is something more concrete about the printed page that would make it unique. So I ask you faithful reader, “If you were creating a book, what would it contain?”
